Magicka

“Magicka?” you say, “What is it?” probably follows logically. Well, it’s quite hard to describe really, I guess it could be described as a what you would get if you cross-bread Diablo, Ultima Online and The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, quite a weird looking baby as you can imagine! In it’s most basic form it’s an isometric RPG game, however what makes it special are two important factors:

  1. An entirely 4-Player co-operative campaign. (3 cheers for co-op gaming with your mates! Hip hip… )
  2. The ability to “create” spells by combining up to 5 base-types of magic (of which there are 8 I think!?).

While the co-op aspect is pretty awesome it’s the second point that makes the game so brilliant. Imaging being presented with a river crossing, only to find out that the bridge has collapsed and the water is a raging torrent, what’s a wizard to do!? Well, you could just cast the frost spell and spray ice-cold mist from your hands to freeze the river or you could combine the frost spell with a few others to say, create a ice-meteorite which comes hurtling down from the sky towards the river and….. oh.. you.

Also, there’s nothing quite like going into a fight for the first time, realising you and your friends are nearly dead and casting an AoE heal only to realise that it’s not just you that was healed, you also healed the goblin that you’ve been trying to kill for the last 2 mins as well!

Needless to say that co-op seems to involve a lot of hilarious “mishaps” and yes, friendly fire is on.

It’s available on Steam now and while there are quite a “few” bugs currently, when they get sorted out I fully expect this to be a blast.
